What to know before pricing an oval

Natural vs laboratory-grown. A 2.00 carat D VS1 oval at Brilliant Earth was listed at $22,600 natural (Ideal cut) and $2,260 laboratory-grown (Super Ideal cut)12. The cut grades differ by one step, so treat the pair as close, not identical.

Weight bands. Among the natural ovals we read at Brilliant Earth, the median was $3,610 around 1 carat and $14,745 around 2 carats1. Laboratory-grown ovals around 2 carats had a median of $2,5102.

Shape-specific checks. Ovals vary in length-to-width ratio and many show a darker "bow tie" across the middle. Neither is a grade on most reports, so look at the photo or video on the listing and the ratio in the stone's details before you choose.

Across merchants. Blue Nile listed a 1.00 carat G VS2 natural oval with a Very Good cut at $3,392 and a 1.01 carat I VVS2 Ideal oval at $2,5533. Cut-grade names differ between jewelers, so compare the report, not the label.

What to check on an oval listing

It changes how long the stone looks; read it in the stone's details.

  • The bow tie

A darker band across the middle. Look at the photo or video, not the grade.

  • Cut grade names

Very Good, Ideal and Super Ideal are each jeweler's own scale3.

  • The report

Laboratory and report number, checked on the laboratory's site.

Oval diamond questions

Do ovals cost less than rounds?

In the natural listings we read at Brilliant Earth, the median around 1 carat was $3,610 for ovals and $4,750 for rounds1. Grades were mixed, so compare stones of the same grade before you conclude.

Why does an oval look bigger?

Ovals spread their weight over a longer outline, so they look larger face-up than round stones of the same weight. Check the ratio on the listing.

About this page

We do not earn anything from purchases today. Every product link is a plain link to the merchant's own page, without an affiliate code. We may join merchants' affiliate programs in the future, and this notice will say so before that changes.

Diamond listings change by the hour: stones sell, prices move and sales start and end. Every price here is the merchant's listed price on the date shown. The merchant's own page is the final word on price, availability and terms.

RingPrice Index does not sell jewelry, does not grade stones and does not take your details. We read merchants' public listing pages and report what they showed.
