What moves the price of a round diamond

Origin. At the same weight and grades, the laboratory-grown stones we matched were listed at 12 to 18 percent of the natural price at 1.5 to 2 carats: a 2.00 carat I VS2 Super Ideal round at Brilliant Earth was $15,050 natural and $1,930 laboratory-grown12.

Weight. Price rises faster than weight. Among the natural rounds we read at Brilliant Earth, the median was $4,750 around 1 carat and $14,920 around 2 carats: about three times the price for twice the weight1.

Colour and clarity. Within one weight band the spread is wide. Natural rounds between 0.90 and 1.09 carats ran from $1,780 to $11,110 on the same page that morning1. A higher colour or clarity grade costs more, and the difference is often hard to see once the stone is set.

What to check. The grading report (laboratory and report number), the cut grade, the return window and whether a sale price has an end date. Blue Nile, for example, states free returns on eligible items within 30 days of shipment; engraved, custom and resized items are excluded4.

Round diamond questions

Is a 0.90 carat stone much cheaper than a 1.00 carat stone?

Often yes, because buyers pay for the round number. Our carat weight guide shows the step we saw at 1.00 carat.

Which grading report should I look for?

The listings we read named GIA for most natural stones and IGI for most laboratory-grown stones at Blue Nile3. Ask for the report number and look it up on the laboratory's site before you pay.

About this page

We do not earn anything from purchases today. Every product link is a plain link to the merchant's own page, without an affiliate code. We may join merchants' affiliate programs in the future, and this notice will say so before that changes.

Diamond listings change by the hour: stones sell, prices move and sales start and end. Every price here is the merchant's listed price on the date shown. The merchant's own page is the final word on price, availability and terms.

RingPrice Index does not sell jewelry, does not grade stones and does not take your details. We read merchants' public listing pages and report what they showed.
