What we saw

Low entry prices. Clean Origin's listing opened with 1.00 carat D VS2 stones at $3604. With Clarity listed a 1.04 carat E VS1 emerald cut at $400 after a stated discount3. Blue Nile's lab-grown page opened with 1.50 carat rounds at about $1,011 to $1,0502.

Price per carat rises slowly. At Brilliant Earth the median laboratory-grown listing we read cost about $738 per carat at 1 carat and about $1,252 per carat at 2 carats1. For natural stones the same ratio roughly doubled (see the carat weight guide).

Sale prices. With Clarity showed a struck-through price and a dollar discount on each stone we read3. Check the end date of any sale and whether the return window changes on sale items.

Labels and reports. Most laboratory-grown stones we read carried an IGI report. The FTC Jewelry Guides require a clear qualifier such as "laboratory-grown" or "laboratory-created" when such a stone is called a diamond5.

What to check on a lab-grown listing

  • Report and number

Most lab-grown stones we read carried an IGI report.

  • Sale prices

Note the end date and whether returns change on sale items3.

  • The label

    "Laboratory-grown" or "laboratory-created" must be clear5.

  • The photo

Two stones with the same grades can still look different.

Lab-grown questions

Will a laboratory-grown diamond hold its value?

We did not find a merchant page that states resale values, so we do not estimate them. The prices above are retail listings only.

Is a lower lab price always the same stone?

No. Compare the report laboratory and number, the cut details and the photo. Two stones with the same headline grades can still differ.

About this page

We do not earn anything from purchases today. Every product link is a plain link to the merchant's own page, without an affiliate code. We may join merchants' affiliate programs in the future, and this notice will say so before that changes.

Diamond listings change by the hour: stones sell, prices move and sales start and end. Every price here is the merchant's listed price on the date shown. The merchant's own page is the final word on price, availability and terms.

RingPrice Index does not sell jewelry, does not grade stones and does not take your details. We read merchants' public listing pages and report what they showed.
