Friendly Diamonds shows every stone with a crossed-out original price; we record only the sale price. Brilliant Earth figures are medians from the listings we read on October 2, not quotes. These illustrate the trade-off.
Lab-grown. At $5,000, a lab-grown ring has a lot of headroom. Friendly Diamonds' cheapest 3 carat round was $1,042 on October 7, and with a $430 plain solitaire that is $1,472 before tax12. You can apply the rest of a $5,000 budget to a much better setting, a higher colour and clarity grade, or simply not spend it all.
Natural. The Brilliant Earth median for a natural round near 1 carat was $4,750 on October 2, 2026, with grades mixed3. Adding the cheapest Brilliant Earth solitaire ($650) puts a typical 1 ct natural ring at about $5,400, just over the budget. At $5,000, a natural stone near 1 carat is tight and requires trading down on grade, metal or setting style.
What Reddit says. r/EngagementRings has many threads from buyers with a $5,000 budget7. The most common lab-grown recommendation is 2 to 3 carats from an online jeweler. Several posters note that 3 ct lab rounds cost far less than many expect.
Lab-grown diamonds resell for 10 to 30% of purchase price, according to industry estimates9. Natural diamonds also sell at a fraction of retail. A $1,500 lab ring is not a $1,500 asset - resale might bring $150 to $450.
Wholesale lab-grown prices fell 13% year-over-year in Q2 2026 (Edahn Golan8). This is good for buyers today, but the resale value of a ring bought now will likely keep falling with wholesale. Friendly Diamonds offers a lifetime trade-in that credits 100% of your original price, but the new purchase must cost at least double.

Good for comparing lab and natural at $5,000
It buys a 3 carat lab-grown round from $1,472 all-in at October 7, 2026 prices, or a natural round near 1 carat (about $5,400 with the cheapest Brilliant Earth setting)1235. A $5,000 lab budget leaves room for a better stone or better setting.
A 3 carat round diamond is approximately 9.4mm in diameter - noticeably larger than 1 carat (about 6.5mm). Size varies with cut proportions; the listing's diamond dimensions are more reliable than carat weight alone.

Diamond listings change by the hour: stones sell, prices move and sales start and end. Every price here is the merchant's listed price on the date shown. The merchant's own page is the final word on price, availability and terms.
RingPrice Index does not sell jewelry, does not grade stones and does not take your details. We read merchants' public listing pages and report what they showed.
